Dr. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar (RAM), FTWAS, FNA, FASc, FRS, FREng, FRSC, also known as Ramesh Mashelkar is a former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He was also the Director of National Chemical Laboratories (NCL), President of Indian National Science Academy (2004-2006), President of Institution of Chemical Engineers (2007) as also the President of Global Research Alliance (2007-2018). He was also first Chairperson of Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), Foreign associate of US National Academy of Engineering and the US National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar spearheaded the successful challenge to the US patent on the use of turmeric for wound healing and also the patent on Basmati rice. These landmark cases have set up new paradigms in the protection of India’s traditional knowledge base, besides leading to the setting up of India’s first Traditional Knowledge Digital Library. In turn, at an international level, this has led to the initiation of the change of the International Patent Classification System to give traditional knowledge its rightful place.

Engineer RA Mashelkar shares three stories of ultra-low-cost design from India that use bottom-up rethinking, and some clever engineering, to bring expensive products (cars, prosthetics) into the realm of the possible for everyone.

In a 142 years, only eight Indians have been elected fellows to America’s National Academy of Science. Among them is Dr Raghunath Anant Mashelkar who talks to Shekhar Gupta about his journey from when his family had to borrow Rs 21 to get him into high school to becoming one of the world’s leading scientists.

The Pune Knowledge Cluster (PKC) has been recently set up to bring together the academia, R&D institutions, and industries in Pune and its surrounding regions to address the challenging problems of the region through innovative means, using scientific knowledge and engaging highly skilled human resources. PKC aims to foster capacity building and promote skills development and entrepreneurship among the students and professionals of the city. The PKC is funded by the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and is administered through IUCAA.

Dr Maskelkar is the Director-General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Chairman of National Innovation Foundation as also the President of Indian National Science Academy, Global Research Alliance and Institute of Chemical Engineers (UK). He has been honoured as a Fellow of Royal Society, Foreign Fellow of US National Academy of Science as also Engineering, Foreign Associate of American Academy of Arts and Science & Fellow of US National Academy of Inventors. He has been elected to the Fellowship of both the Australian Academy of Science and Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.
